Lake of Discovery

My husband and I walk a wooded lake trail not too far from where we live. Every time we visit is different. Turtles hang out on floating logs on sunny days. Songbirds often can be heard. Periodically we see ducks, geese, egrets, herons, hawks and crows. Groups of deer can be seen watching from a safe distance every so often. Once we noticed a muskrat at the edge of the lake paddling furiously away. The small lake itself is ever changing, down or up, green or brown, depending upon area rainfall. Trees fall then rot, and new trees appear. Tall grasses grow and recede as do water plants at the lake’s edge. Most hardwoods are bare now at the end of winter except for a few dead leaves. Soon they will be putting out catkins and new leaves. Already there are a few early bloomers. The onset of the pandemic during the spring of 2020 motivated us to begin visiting our lake trail more often. Spring at the Greenhouse

Whenever the world weighs me down, a sure way to get a spiritual lift is to go to a place where I am surrounded by plants, plants and more plants. That might be the woods, a botanical garden or my backyard. It could be a plant shop or nursery. This time of year, the early spring, is a prime time to visit a plant market here in Alabama. While my neighborhood and the woods are just beginning to green up, a bit of pink coming out on the redbuds, and a few flowering plants blooming, cascades of blossoms and foliage have arrived at the shops and nurseries. Under the soft glow of a greenhouse skylight, my eyes delight at the multitude of brightly colored flowers and one hundred shades of greenery from the lightest yellow green to the darkest blue green. And that's just the showy flowering plants. Young ferns, ivy, succulents, ground cover, and a vast array of other interesting plants also overflow the tables and shelves. Beginning

Since childhood I have been an ardent fan and follower of the natural world. I met my husband while hiking. Thanks to the pandemic, we have been motivated to spend even more time outdoors observing wildlife, hunting, kayaking and fishing. Of late I have found myself musing about these experiences and others from my past. I feel the need to more deeply explore my impressions and share them with others who might be affirmed or inspired. A major inspiration for my blog was reading and thinking about the book “Deeper Currents: The Sacraments of Hunting and Fishing” by Donald C. Jackson (University Press of Mississippi). I ordered the book of essays last March, set it on my kitchen table, and read it slowly into the summer. The book - by a pastor, wildlife biologist, and lifelong hunter and fisherman - was just what I needed to read to foster my soul’s journey into the natural realm.
